Background of the study:
Traditional healing practices have long been embedded within the cultural framework of many Nigerian communities, often shaping health-seeking behavior and influencing modern medical interventions. In Ede North Local Government, Osun State, these practices coexist with contemporary healthcare systems, creating a unique dynamic that affects childhood immunization rates. Recent investigations indicate that reliance on traditional remedies may lead to vaccine hesitancy or delays, as caregivers often prioritize indigenous methods over modern preventive measures (Adeyemi, 2023; Olawale, 2024). The integration of spiritual and herbal treatments in local healthcare practices has been linked to a strong cultural identity, yet it poses challenges to public health initiatives aimed at preventing childhood diseases (Babatunde, 2025). Community leaders and traditional healers hold influential roles in disseminating health beliefs, which can either support or undermine immunization programs. Moreover, socio-economic factors coupled with limited access to formal healthcare compound these challenges. This study will explore how traditional healing beliefs intersect with immunization practices, the resulting impact on vaccine uptake, and potential strategies to harmonize traditional and modern health practices for improved child health outcomes (Eze, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
In Ede North, traditional healing practices often overshadow modern immunization efforts, contributing to reduced vaccine coverage among children. This conflict between indigenous beliefs and contemporary health recommendations creates a public health dilemma, as low immunization rates may lead to outbreaks of preventable diseases. The influence of local cultural practices, misinformation, and mistrust in modern medicine exacerbates the problem, thereby hindering efforts to achieve herd immunity (Ibrahim, 2024). Additionally, the lack of structured collaboration between traditional healers and healthcare providers further complicates intervention strategies (Okoro, 2025).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the prevalence of traditional healing practices in the community.
To evaluate the impact of these practices on childhood immunization rates.
To propose strategies for integrating traditional and modern health approaches.
Research questions:
How prevalent are traditional healing practices among caregivers in Ede North?
What is the relationship between these practices and childhood immunization uptake?
What collaborative strategies can be developed to improve immunization rates?
Research Hypotheses:
There is a significant negative correlation between adherence to traditional healing and immunization uptake.
Communities with higher reliance on traditional practices have lower childhood immunization rates.
Integrating traditional healers into public health initiatives improves vaccine coverage.
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it bridges the gap between cultural practices and modern health strategies, potentially informing policy changes and community-based interventions. It highlights the need for collaboration between traditional healers and healthcare professionals to enhance childhood immunization rates and overall public health (Chukwu, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to exploring the impact of traditional healing practices on childhood immunization within Ede North Local Government, focusing solely on local cultural influences and healthcare practices.
Definitions of terms:
Traditional healing practices: Indigenous methods of treatment using herbal remedies and spiritual interventions.
Immunization rates: The proportion of children who have received recommended vaccines.
Childhood immunization: The process of vaccinating children to prevent infectious diseases.
